Robert Emory Johnson is a Bay Area-based curator and artist. He was born in 1932 and grew up in and around Detroit, where he started drawing at 6 and bought his first camera by 15. San Francisco art critic Thomas Albright once described Johnson as an artist whose work is devoted to probing beneath surfaces to a center of things where there are no rigorous distinctions among art, anthropology, religion, or life itself. His work has been shown in group shows and galleries in Los Angeles and San Francisco. His first one-man show was at the West Marin Art Center in Stinson Beach, Calif., in 1951, the most recent at the Davis and Cline Gallery in Ashland and at the Schneider Museum of Art in Oregon. Works of Robert Emory Johnson are in the collections of the De Young Museum and the Legion of Honor in San Francisco
